The Vietnamese Girl Statue

Nestled in Hai Ba Trung Park, along the south bank of the tranquil Perfume River, the Vietnamese Girl Statue is a sculpture with a truly special story from Hue. This remarkable piece was created by the late sculptor Le Thanh Nhon in 1970 at his private workshop in Saigon. Carved from stone in a bust style, it stands an impressive 2.6 meters tall and weighs nearly 5 tons, depicting the graceful profile of a Vietnamese woman with an elegant face and her hair traditionally wrapped in a classic headscarf.

When sculptor Le Thanh Nhon moved to Australia, the statue was temporarily relocated to a relative's home in Ho Chi Minh City. Legend has it that part of the fence had to be dismantled just to get the statue into the homeowner's yard! Before his passing in 2002, Le Thanh Nhon sent a letter to his friend, translator and Hue scholar Buu Y, who was living in Hue, expressing his heartfelt wish for the Vietnamese Girl Statue to return to its spiritual home in Hue.

To fulfill the sculptor's last wish, the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province made extensive efforts to contact and communicate with Le Thanh Nhon's family. After many years of dedicated work, the arrangement was finally completed with the agreement of all parties. In April 2011, the Vietnamese Girl Statue was lovingly brought to Hue City and placed in Hai Ba Trung Park, right in front of the former Dong Khanh Girls' School (now Hai Ba Trung High School). The statue was officially inaugurated to commemorate the 36th anniversary of national reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2011).

Since its return to Hue, the Vietnamese Girl Statue has graced a spacious, airy, and lush green setting. Today, this beautiful artwork, a profound tribute to Vietnamese women, has truly become a distinctive cultural highlight along the banks of the Perfume River in the ancient capital of Hue.
Victory Monument

Nestled within the historic Dong Loc T-junction Relic Site (Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province), the Victory Monument stands as a powerful tribute to the unwavering determination and sacrifices made by volunteer youth brigades, soldiers, workers, and guerrillas along the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Anti-American Resistance War. The heart of this monument beautifully captures the image of a female volunteer youth reaching high, waving a signal flag, guiding convoys as they bravely advanced south.

The monument proudly faces the Dong Loc T-junction, a sacred place forever etched in history due to the sacrifice of 10 young female volunteer youth during the struggle for national reunification. During the Anti-American Resistance War, Dong Loc T-junction was a critically important traffic hub on the Truong Son Trail. In the summer of 1968, a volunteer youth squad of 10 courageous young women, aged between 17 and 24, was stationed here. Their vital mission was to guard the junction, defuse unexploded bombs, and repair roads to ensure continuous traffic flow after devastating bombings.

On the afternoon of July 24, 1968, the women were ordered to a critical area where the enemy had just dropped bombs. Their urgent task was to fill the bomb craters, repair the road, and deepen drainage ditches along the crucial single-lane path to quickly clear it for passing vehicles. Suddenly, a group of enemy jet fighters roared from north to south, flying over their position. All the women immediately dropped to the ground. As soon as the sound of the planes faded, they quickly resumed their vital work. Unexpectedly, the enemy jet fighters circled back and dropped a series of bombs, directly hitting the very shelter where the women had just taken refuge.
The volunteer youth squads who followed rushed to the scene, but tragically, found no one, heard no human sound. All 10 young women had perished at a very young age, most of them unmarried... The profound sacrifice of these 10 brave female volunteer youth at Dong Loc T-junction stands as a powerful and condensed symbol of the Heroic, Indomitable, Loyal, and Capable spirit of Vietnamese women, and indeed of all volunteer youth forces during the Anti-American Resistance War.
